Chester-le-Street is a market town situated on the River Wear, dating back to 100 A.D. The town’s fascinating past means there are lots of things for history lovers to see and do when visiting. The town’s appeal is boosted by its proximity to Newcastle and Durham, and it offers something for everyone.
Transport and Travel
Situated between Newcastle and Durham, there are excellent transport links from Chester-le-Street. It is close the A1(M) motorway and A167 offering excellent connections to areas throughout the region. Bus services are good, with Go North East operating from the town. The railway station located in the town centre is on the East Coast Main Line of the National Rail network.
Newcastle airport, offering domestic and international flights, is easily accessible via the A1(M).
Parks and Recreation
There are plenty of opportunities for some family fun in Chester-le-Street, from local nature reserves and country parks to the town's Riverside Park. The park is a popular place to walk, exercise and simply enjoy the surroundings, with artist-designed ornamental gardens, an events arena and a popular play area. In the summer months “The splash pad” opens which is a state-of-the-art play facility which is free to use and suitable for families from toddlers to early teens. It is the only splash pad in County Durham and attracts visitors from throughout the region.
The majestic, 600-year-old Lumley Castle sits on the eastern bank of the River Wear and overlooks the town. Emirates Riverside stadium is the home of Durham County Cricket Club and has hosted many international cricket fixtures as well as music gigs and concerts. Beamish Open Air Museum, a short drive away, takes you back in time to the early 20th century, depicting the lives of local, ordinary people.
There is also easy access to the North-East coastline, Durham Dales and the North Pennines, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Schools
There are numerous schools and educational establishments for children of all ages in the area, including Hermitage Academy and Park View School.
Restaurants and Shopping
The high street offers many restaurants, cafes, shops, high street favourites and supermarkets as well as the local market which takes place on Saturdays. The local pubs offer an array of menu options and Sunday lunches.
You can also find local produce at numerous farm shops and regular farmers' markets.
Housing Market
Chester-le-Street has a home for every type of buyer, offering good houses in a well-respected area, within an established commuter belt. The centre of the town typically offers period, terraced housing, close to amenities and the train station. There is newer, purpose-built accommodation in the centre too, in the form of apartment blocks and smaller housing developments.
