Why move to Rowlands Gill?

Rowlands Gill is a beautiful greenbelt area in Tyne and Wear with lots of open space and stunning views across the valley and River Derwent.  As well as being a small, picturesque village, Rowlands Gill is well-equipped for local amenities and benefits from being in such close proximity to Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Transport and Travel

Rowlands Gill has great transport links and is 10 miles away from Newcastle City centre.  The A694 runs through the town and there are frequent bus services to Newcastle City Centre, the Metrocentre and Consett.  The A694 leads to the A1(M) providing easy access to those travelling north or southbound.

Newcastle Railway Station, on the east coast mainline, is 18 minutes’ drive away and provides access to the national rail network.

Newcastle International Airport is 10 miles away and easily accessible via the A1(M).

Parks and Recreation

Rowlands Gill sits in lovely countryside within Tyne and Wear, where urbanisation is controlled.  The Gibside Estate, now owned by the National Trust, is a lovely place to visit for a day out.  Nearby Chopwell Woods is also a brilliant place to go if you enjoy walking, cycling or horse riding. The area was also chosen as the location for the re-introduction of Red Kite birds into semi-rural areas.

The Derwent Walk Country Park has Green Flag status and features a mixture of woodlands, meadows, wetlands, riverside and reclaimed industrial sites, all linked together by the 11-mile Derwent Walk.

Schools

Rowlands Gill has good primary schools, meaning the town is ideal for growing families and there is a good choice of senior schools within a 5-mile range.

Restaurants and Shopping

Rowlands Gill’s main high street is Station Road, which is well served by independent shops and cafés and a small supermarket.  Just 10 minutes’ drive away, on the opposite side of the A1, is the Metrocentre – a large shopping mall with a wide range of restaurants and free parking.  Newcastle City Centre is also easily accessible for both shopping and restaurants.

Housing Market

Rowlands Gill’s location and semi-rural surroundings make it particularly attractive to house-hunters. There are some exclusive housing estates in the area such as Hamsterley Mill and Lintzford Mill but Rowlands Gill has properties for all types of buyers.  New build properties have gone up in recent years and the village caters from renters to homeowners effectively.
